Are my labia normal? An honest answer from a surgeon

August 21, 2026

Almost always, yes. Normal variation in the labia is enormous, asymmetry is the rule rather than the exception, and there is no “correct” measurement. If you have arrived here quietly searching whether yours falls within normal, the answer is most likely that it does.

The useful question is a different one, and almost nobody says it out loud: does it bother you? Because that —not size— is what determines whether labiaplasty makes any sense.

Most women who ask about this do not need surgery. Saying so is part of the job.

There is no normal measurement

No anatomy textbook contains a figure for what a labium minus “should” measure. Variation between healthy women is enormous: in size, in shape, in colour and in symmetry.

Two things worth knowing before you read on:

What has changed over the past twenty years is not anyone’s anatomy. Three things changed from the outside: full hair removal, which exposed an area nobody used to look at; tight sportswear; and the images we compare ourselves against, which are retouched or outright censored in order to be published at all.

So why is labiaplasty performed?

For symptoms. Not for centimetres. These are the medically sound reasons:

That last point deserves an honest caveat. A discomfort being psychological rather than physical does not make it less real or less operable. But it does call for a slower conversation, because surgery solves an anatomical problem, not a learned insecurity.

Signs you probably do not need surgery

This is what you will almost never read on a clinic’s website, which is exactly why it is here:

If you recognise yourself in that list, what you need is information, not an operating theatre. A consultation is for exactly that.

The consultation is about what is happening to you, not about what you measure.

What labiaplasty actually is

It is the surgery that reduces the labia minora —and in some cases the majora— so they stop protruding and chafing. It is performed under local anaesthetic, takes about one hour, requires no hospital stay, and recovery is around one week.

You can find the techniques and indicative pricing on the labiaplasty in Malaga page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for one side to be longer than the other?

Yes. Asymmetry is usual, not exceptional. Correcting it is only considered when the difference causes real discomfort.

At what age can labiaplasty be done?

It is best to wait until development is complete. In very young patients the general recommendation is to postpone the decision unless symptoms are significant, and always to assess it in consultation.

Does it hurt?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so there is no pain during surgery. The first few days bring discomfort and swelling, well controlled with the usual pain relief.

Will the scar show?

The incision follows the natural edge of the tissue, so the scar stays concealed. As with any surgery, the final result also depends on how you heal.

Does insurance cover it?

In most cases no, as it is considered cosmetic surgery. Check directly with your insurer.

If you have read this far

Asking commits you to nothing. On the labiaplasty page there is a five-question self-assessment —anonymous, nothing is sent anywhere— to help you put into words what is happening before you talk to anyone.
