Talking about the cost of liposuction in general terms is close to meaningless, because too many things change the figure — from the areas you want treated to the way the clinic operates. Here is what actually drives the price.

What the price of a liposuction depends on

• The extent of the surgery. A small, localised procedure is not comparable to one covering large areas, mainly because of how long the operation takes.
• Hospital costs. The type of surgery determines how long you stay and how much post-operative care you need.
• Theatre costs. Time in theatre is time the theatre cannot be used for anyone else, and the medication and materials used during surgery count too.
• Equipment. Newer technology, such as VASER liposuction, carries its own cost.
• The team. The plastic surgeon, the assistants, the post-operative care staff — their fees are part of the total.
• The anaesthetist. Part of the team, but worth naming separately: the anaesthetist and the agents used both affect the price.
• Pre-op and follow-up. The pre-operative work-up, the post-operative reviews and the follow-up are all included, and all cost something.
