What to Eat if You Have Lipoedema (and What to Avoid)

In shortNo food cures lipoedema and no diet makes it disappear. What is documented is that reducing inflammation helps with pain, heaviness and bruising. This is not about losing weight. It is about calming inflammation.

Why dieting does not remove lipoedema

Lipoedema fat does not respond to a calorie deficit the way normal fat does. That is why many women slim down in the face, chest and waist while the legs stay the same. That is not lack of willpower, it is the disease.

What usually makes symptoms worse

  • Sugar and refined flour. They raise inflammation and retention.
  • Ultra-processed food and excess salt. More heaviness in the legs.
  • Alcohol. Worsens retention and capillary fragility, so more bruising.
  • Long periods standing or sitting still. Not food, but it weighs as much.

What usually helps

  • Enough protein at each meal, to keep the muscle that pumps the lymphatic system.
  • Anti-inflammatory fats: extra virgin olive oil, oily fish, nuts.
  • Whole vegetables and fruit, for fibre and potassium.
  • Water. Drinking too little makes retention worse, not better.

What about keto and fasting?

Some patients report less pain on low-carbohydrate approaches, but the evidence is still limited and not everyone tolerates them. If tried, do it with a nutrition professional and without turning it into an obsession.

What food will not do

It will not restore proportion to legs with established lipoedema, nor remove the nodules. That is where medical treatment comes in. Diet accompanies, it does not replace.
