Recovery After Lipedema Surgery: What to Expect

August 21, 2026

Recovery is the part of lipedema surgery that worries patients most, and the part that gets explained least. This is what actually happens, week by week.

Lipedema surgery removes the diseased fat in a controlled way, area by area, protecting the surrounding tissue and the lymphatic system throughout. It removes the fat that diet and exercise cannot shift, however much time you give them.

What does the recovery look like?

Most patients are back to ordinary daily activity in around 7 days, although this varies with your skin and with how much tissue was treated. In those first days, do not plan on doing much: the treated areas will be sore and swollen.

Swelling is the part that takes longest. Expect it to settle progressively over about six weeks. It does not disappear overnight, and that is normal.

Two things make the difference to how comfortable that period is:

Ask us anything about the recovery before you decide. No obligation.

How long does the operation take?

It depends on how much tissue has to be removed, on your skin, and on the areas involved. Whether it is the arms or the legs, the operation usually takes around two and a half hours.

In some cases the treatment cannot be completed in a single session. That is not a commercial decision: removing too much in one go risks electrolyte imbalance, so it is staged for safety.

Aftercare is not the same for everyone

There are different stages of lipedema, and the tissue behaves differently in each. Harder, coarser, more fibrous tissue means a longer and more demanding recovery than a stage 1 case. Your instructions are adapted to your tissue, and following them exactly, follow-up appointments included, is what protects the result.

Lipedema surgery in Málaga with Dr. Yagües

What patients notice after lipedema surgery is not only the shape. The heaviness and the fatigue reduce markedly, and so does the pain after walking. Those are the things that shape an ordinary day.

Dr. María Lourdes Yagües has dedicated her career to plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, and is a member of ISAPS, ASAPS, SECPRE and AECEP. She assesses and operates personally, and consultations are available in English.
