Lipoedema Stage 1: How It Looks and What to Do

In shortStage 1 lipoedema is the earliest phase: the skin still looks normal, but the fat feels nodular underneath, hurts when pressed and bruises without any knock. It is the stage where most can be done and the one that is almost never diagnosed.

How stage 1 looks

The skin surface is still smooth. There are no visible lumps, which is why so many women are told it is cellulite or that they simply need to lose weight. What is visible is a disproportion between the trunk and the legs: narrow waist, heavy hips and thighs that do not slim down even when the scales move.

The signs that separate it from ordinary fat

Pain on pressure. Normal fat does not hurt.
Bruises with no knock, from fragile small vessels.
Small nodules under the skin, like grains of rice.
Symmetry. Both legs equally, unlike lymphoedema.
Hands and feet spared. The volume stops at the ankle.

Why catching it at stage 1 matters

Lipoedema is progressive. At stage 1 the tissue is barely fibrosed and the lymphatic system still works well, so compression, manual drainage and low-impact exercise genuinely slow it down. By stage 3 the tissue damage is irreversible.

Stage 1 is not the time to have surgery. It is the time to find out.
